MacMini. It's so freaking small. And I have to say, this is probably the computer I'm going to have to recommend to everyone who asks me what kind of computer they should buy. What a sweet little machine.
After way too much time without a working AC adaptor, I finally got around to calling in the problem. And now I have a new adaptor. Yay. As such, I'm ceremonially blogging from the iBook. So there's that.
I recently upgraded my old desktop system. Well, the motherboard had died, so I figured I might as well upgrade the whole machine. So, I'd heard a thing or two about Ubuntu Linux, a new distribution based on Debian, but far more user-friendly. I like Debian. I like user-friendly. So I burned an ISO, and right now I'm posting from a GNOME blogging utility. It's pretty nice.
As a complete and uttery Mac fanboy, I was excited to see the new G5 iMac. But yeah, I have to say I have reservations about the new design. Unlike others, I liked the previous G4 design, and of course the original G3 design was brilliant. The G5, though... I'm just not digging it.
For one, I really think the white-plastic look has to go. I love my iBook, but it's too kiddy. Apple doesn't need brushed metal to distinguish their pro-user systems from their home-user systems. Performance (and price) are already distinguishing enough.
Further, the stand just looks flimsy. Look at it from the profile view. I get a sense of dischord looking at that: I want my $1300 computer to be well supported so that it won't tip over in a light breeze.
Otherwise, I do rathr like the extremely nice all-in-one design. That's impressive from both an engineering and aesthetic viewpoint. I also like the slot-loading disk drive on the side. A nice touch.
Not that it matters. I'm poor. :)
Well, I bit the bullet and upgraded my iBook's OS to OS X 10.3, aka Panther. I'm generally happy with it so far. Right now, I'm "settling in", getting preferences in order and copying files over from my FireWire disk. Anyway, just wanted to see if NetNewsWire was working. It appears to.
An interesting article on the development of long-term, "Social Infrastructure" software. Give it a read. The article also brings up a point I'd like to make myself.
Oh, Steve Jobs. Your genius (or perhaps your turtlenecks) bring immeasurable joy to my heart. It also makes me want to drop $3k on a new Power Mac. Most impressive.
Woohoo. BitTorrent is working again on campus. Sweet. I'm currently downloading episodes 1-5 of Full Metal Alchemist. I've heard good things. As well as the first ten episodes of Slam Dunk! I've heard good things there too. I'm also embarking on an effort to redownload all 75 or so episodes of Hikaru no Go for long-term archival on my big ass hard drive. Wee.
Google is a very powerful search tool. We all know that. But Googlism might be even more powerful... well, at least in the fields of dubious information and non-sequitor humor.
Presumably, it parses search results from Google and extracts data from them, resulting in often-humorous descriptions. Some particularly funny examples:
- kentucky is a very interesting state if you happen to be interested in it
- new jersey is the back door to hell
- new jersey is not blue * nor is pennsylvania
- new jersey is buff colored
- ninja is stuck on puree
- ninja is speared through the leg
- ninja is a ninja ninjaman
- ninja is too much funk (!!)
- spam is glue for male bonding
- google is just the juice (??)
- google is $deity
- google is not god
Hilarious, self-contradictory automatically generated nonsense. And so insightful.
Picked up a 160 GB external hard drive today. Not a bad deal, really. I finally have room for all those MST3K episodes I've wanted to download... :)
I'm posting this from a sweet little OS X program called NetNewsWire. It's basically the ultimate blogging tool: subscribe to a Blog's RSS Feed, read posts, and even post to your own site. It's cool.
